Quality in Academics

The concept of quality is as old as human beings on earth. Our ancestors lived in a natural world. Efforts to improve the condition of human life resulted in developing hand tools and better products that contributed to the modern concept of quality. Quality is an integral component of human life. Today, quality is regarded as the most essential element in any performance that delights or satisfies customers or end users. In the long run, what survives is quality.

Quality is the “fitness for use” of any entity (Dr. J. M. Juran). Fitness for use is determined by the extent to which an entity serves the purpose of the user. Quality is judged by the viewpoint of the customer. Quality may be defined as the “Totality of the characteristics of an entity that bears on its ability to satisfy the stated and implied needs” (ISO-8402).
